Our 8 Favorite Restaurants in Sunderland: A Local’s POV

Although the bustle and buzz of big-city dining spots has its place, small-town restaurants stand out with staff that truly know you. And if you’re visiting from out of town, the hosts, servers, and chefs will treat you like a special guest. You’re in for this meaningful and delicious experience at the following restaurants in Sunderland, Massachusetts, especially if you pair them with the right cannabis products.

1. Goten of Japan

We’ll gladly eat at any restaurant on this list, but Goten of Japan is probably our favorite, and we’re certainly not alone among Sunderland residents in saying that. The exterior’s Japanese architecture is always a sight to behold, and the hibachi and sushi menu are among our town’s greatest delicacies. On the hibachi side of things, the Lobster Delight is a can’t-miss, and the Hill of Fire sushi roll speaks for itself. Go here for the best Japanese food this side of I-91.

  • Address: 104 Old Amherst Rd, Sunderland, MA 01375
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 1 minute / 0.6 miles

2. Blue Heron Restaurant

This small-town restaurant has earned big-name acclaim. Blue Heron Restaurant was a semi-finalist in the 2022 James Beard Foundation Awards. We would be enthusiastic about it even if it weren’t in our backyard since its organic, locally sourced ingredients make everything taste that much fresher and more alive. From the warm mushroom salad to the pork chop with apple bacon jam, the options at Blue Heron are equally indulgent, nutritious, and delicious.

  • Address: 112 N Main St, Sunderland, MA 01375
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 3 minutes / 1.4 miles

3. Bridgeside Grille

For a country-cozy spin on the local ingredient sourcing that makes Blue Heron such a highlight, eat at Bridgeside Grille down the block. Here, you’ll find elevated pub fare — think garlic bread slathered with gorgonzola cheese, fried chicken breast and house sauce piled high in a massive sandwich, and mussels with some heat. We especially love Bridgeside Grille for hungry weekend mornings when a big breakfast burrito or pancake platter is exactly what we need.

  • Address: 9 Amherst Rd, Sunderland, MA 01375
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 2 minutes / 1.2 miles

4. Wild Roots

On a hot summer day when we need something cooling and refreshing with our lunch, we head to Wild Roots. The smoothies here are Sunderland’s best, with classic options like banana and nut butter alongside more novel, potentially immune-supporting chocolatey and fruity options. We also like that the mains here are often packaged to go — this comes in clutch on our most jam-packed days, especially since Wild Roots is in the heart of Sunderland.

Pro tip: Wild Roots also has Greenfield and Northampton locations if you’re exploring Western Mass on 4/20 or any other day.

  • Address: 11 Bridge St, Sunderland, MA 01375
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 2 minutes / 1.4 miles

5. Frontier Pizza

The areas we serve are full of excellent pizza spots, and we’re lucky to have a top-notch one right next door. Frontier Pizza, which is family-owned like Altai and has been in operation since 1972, serves up cheesy classics alongside meat-stacked, savory delights. We can never say no to the Pesto Delight, but when we’re in a sandwich mood, the large grinders, in particular the Steak Bomb, are absolutely mouthwatering.

For a whole different kind of grinder, check out our accessories menu at Altai.

  • Address: 283 Amherst Rd, Sunderland, MA 01375
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 2 minutes / 0.2 miles

6. Banchan Korean Deli

Flavorful meat bowls are the name of the game at Banchan Korean Deli, which is a hop and a skip from Altai. We love that this restaurant is a deli with Korean food instead of your usual American classics — it’s a novel twist we appreciate. You can’t go wrong with the kimbap or bibimbap bowls, and adding the beef bulgogi makes for a complete lunch. Plus, the ramen packets available here make us feel like we’re in college again in a perfectly nostalgic way.

  • Address: 285 Amherst Rd, Sunderland, MA 01375
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 2 minutes / 0.1 miles

7. Wolfie’s Restaurant

Just over the Sunderland-Deerfield border lies Wolfie’s Restaurant, one of the must-try dining spots in the greater Sunderland-Amherst area. From the cozy neighborhood ambiance to the classic comforts on the menu, your taste buds will dance while your mind and body feel at ease. We’re equally enamored by the familiar dishes like chicken parm and the more novel preparations such as sweet and sour chicken pasta.

  • Address: 52 S Main St, South Deerfield, MA 01373
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 6 minutes / 3.1 miles

8. 3 Amigos

Resist the temptation to call 3 Amigos a Mexican restaurant — that’s only part of the story. The chefs at this Sunderland-Amherst landmark fuse Puerto Rican, Chilean, and Mexican food with an extensive taco menu, or you can try dishes specific to one country with the 3 Amigos Plates. We also love the absolutely stuffed breakfast burrito (the “Burripl3ta”) for weekend brunch, though all times are good times at 3 Amigos.

  • Address: 68 Cowls Rd, Amherst, MA 01002
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 5 minutes / 3.2 miles

Tips for an elevated Sunderland dining experience

Sunderland’s best restaurants spotlight exquisite flavor with stunning presentation, and it all pops even more with your senses enhanced and your stomach growling for more. A great way to enrich your perspective and get some munchies going is with the cannabis products available at Altai Alternative Care in Sunderland.

Our tips for pairing cannabis with great Sunderland restaurants include pacing yourself, timing it right, consuming privately, having a sober buddy, and getting recommendations from our friendly, knowledgeable budtenders.

  • Start low and go slow. Initially, consume a smaller dose of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis) than you think you can handle. Only increase your dose after your product’s onset time passes. You’ll find it easier to appreciate your restaurant of choice when you feel balanced — relaxed yet focused, euphoric yet energized — instead of overwhelmed.
  • Consider timing. Smoking cannabis flower or pre-rolls, or vaping or consuming concentrates, brings on effects much faster than ingesting edibles or tinctures. Time your consumption right so that the buzz peaks around when your food arrives. Each bite will taste that much better.
  • Keep it discreet. Since you can’t consume cannabis in public in Massachusetts, you’ll need to start your elevated restaurant journey somewhere private. Pop that edible at home before you head out, or enjoy some Morning Dew flower and take the passenger seat.
  • Don’t go it alone. Since not all of Sunderland has robust public transit access, driving might be your only option, but you can’t do that if you’ve consumed cannabis before leaving the house. (Seriously — feeling even a little altered means you’re too “high” to drive.) Bring a designated driver with you so that you can get around safely and, just as importantly, have someone to enjoy your restaurant experience with.
  • Ask a budtender for product recs. Not sure how to figure out which cannabis products might pair best with your Sunderland restaurant adventures? Ask the friendly budtenders at Altai Alternative Care, located next to Frontier Pizza on Route 116/Amherst Road in Sunderland. We cultivate a warm and welcoming presence, we listen to your needs, and we find you a match made in heaven.
