8 Amherst Coffee Shops Where We Get Our Caffeine

Coffee and cannabis have more in common than you might think. They’re a beloved part of many people’s days and offer a daily ritual that provides a grounding quality. Cannabis and coffee both come in wide varieties, too, with a wide range of aromas and flavors to suit any palate. They also pair well together, and combining them makes for a wonderful day in our neighboring Amherst, where there are plenty of great cafes to enjoy. Keep reading for our favorite Amherst coffee shops and tips on pairing coffee with cannabis.

1. Futura Coffee Roasters

Futura Coffee Roasters might be the go-to coffee shop for us — it is, after all, just across Sunderland’s border with Amherst’s Mill District. Even if it weren’t, though, we might travel much farther for its standout single-origin coffee, which is absolutely bursting with flavor. We love Futura’s cozy, focus-friendly espresso too, not to mention the all-day sandwiches and bagels. Our favorite part, though, is enjoying a beverage on one of the lawn chairs outside.

2. Cushman Market & Cafe

Known for selling an abundance of grocery items, snacks, and household goods, Cushman Market & Cafe is also home to some of North Amherst’s best coffee. We’re partial to ordering a maple latte and elevating it with a hazelnut shot, and on hot summer days, we love cooling down with an iced coffee and a lavender shot. No visit is complete without checking out Cushman’s collection of vintage salt and pepper shakers — it’s Amherst’s quirkiest art display.

3. Amherst Coffee + Bar

Every day of the week, Amherst Coffee + Bar near Amherst College brews up a delightful morning cup of joe. On Tuesdays through Saturdays, it also becomes a bar starting at 4 p.m.. Try working from here on a Friday, then sticking around to start your weekend with a different kind of refreshment. We know of few better transitions from office hours to fun times in the Pioneer Valley.

  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 12 minutes / 7.2 miles

4. Masuda’s Café

Woman- and Asian-owned, Masuda’s Café specializes in coffee flavors you’ll rarely find elsewhere in the greater Sunderland-Amherst area. We adore the pistachio and cardamom latte, which is as creamy as it is comforting. If we’re coming in especially in need of a boost, the Red Eye does the trick, and on a warm day, the shaken iced espresso offers a special kind of jolt. Plus, the exposed brick and hardwood floors at Masuda’s make for an especially cozy visit.

5. Share Amherst

It’s in the name: For fresh coffee with a friend, a date, or family visiting for the weekend, Share Amherst is exactly where to head. We love Share’s espresso tonic; it’s served with a lime wedge for a sprinkle of fancy. We’re also fond of spending a crisp spring morning on the small patio facing Pleasant Street for some of Amherst’s best people-watching. Pro tip: If you trek out to Northampton, Share has an equally welcoming location there too.

  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 13 minutes / 5.8 miles

6. West Street Coffee and Tea

Down in South Amherst, West Street Coffee and Tea is a classic café: open in the morning, closed by the early afternoon. Its classic wood chairs and tables, alongside its huge bookshelf crammed with reading selections, make us feel like we’re starting our day in a loved one’s well-kept home. The breakfast options here are an absolute steal too: a $3.50 egg sandwich, a $4 grilled cheese. And while the prices are a bargain, the flavors are exquisite.

  • Address: 450 West St, Amherst, MA 01002
  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 16 minutes / 10 miles

7. Coronation Café

Although Coronation Café is a full-on restaurant, “Café” is in its name for a reason — its coffee is as flavorful as its food. The cortado is equally delicate and rich, giving us a much-needed boost alongside filling meals like the chipotle chicken bacon ranch panini. Coronation is also known for its handmade soft pretzels, including a garlic parmesan flavor we haven’t seen elsewhere. It pairs perfectly with coffee.

  • Distance from Altai Alternative Care: 15 minutes / 6 miles

8. The Works Café

The Works Café’s Amherst location holds the unique distinction of being this small Northeast chain’s only Western Mass spot, and we’re glad it’s in our area. This counter-serve fixture’s vibe is halfway between a homey cafe and a fast-paced coffee shop, and the minor bustle hits different with a cold brew and generously glazed muffin. We especially love that The Works is open till 8 p.m. so we can take it easy before a show at The Drake next door.

How to pair coffee with cannabis

Mixing coffee and cannabis can be a delightful experience if you understand their potential interactions. Nail down your tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) dose beforehand, or choose cannabidiol (CBD) if you prefer a non-intoxicating, more balanced experience. And, as always, start low and go slow, consider the timing, and don’t get behind the steering wheel.

Know how cannabis and coffee interact

Cannabis’s unique powers largely come from THC, its most prevalent phytocannabinoid (a type of naturally occurring plant compound). Consuming THC may change your mood and perception, whereas the caffeine found in coffee promotes alertness. You may thus feel more focused, creative, energetic, and a bit altered when mixing coffee and caffeine.

The terpenes (another type of naturally occurring plant compound) in cannabis may shape your experience too. If you get jittery with coffee, try pairing it with cannabis cultivars or products known to have potentially calming terpenes such as myrcene, caryophyllene, or linalool.

On the other hand, if you’re such a coffee fiend that you’re seeking a sharper jolt, pair your favorite brew with cannabis that has potentially energizing terpenes or cannabinoids. As terpenes go, limonene may be your best bet, and in terms of cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv) or cannabigerol (CBG) may fit the bill.

Consider your THC dosage

Coffee-cannabis lovers often find that consuming a microdose of at most 2.5 mg THC alongside caffeine leads to subtle, functional effects. Changes in mood or sensory perception are typically more noticeable at 2.5 to 5 mg of THC.

At higher doses, THC’s intoxicating effects may be strong enough that they effectively overwrite caffeine’s energizing potential. If you’ve chosen a cannabis product associated with focus and energy, chances are you’ll still feel alert. If you’ve instead chosen one often found to feel calming or relaxing, these feelings may mask the invigoration associated with coffee.

Try CBD and coffee instead

CBD has no perception-altering qualities, so it may make for a gentler coffee-cannabis experience. Coffee and CBD are an especially good combination if you often get coffee jitters, since CBD is often found to melt away tension and ease restlessness. You may feel ready to power through your day instead of so energized you’re overstimulated.

Start low and go slow

Whether you pair coffee with CBD or straight-up cannabis flower, always consume less of your pairing at first than you think you can handle. Then, wait for your cannabis product’s onset time — a friendly budtender can tell you what the product’s onset time is — to pass before consuming more. This way, you don’t overshoot into big-time jitters or an overly sedated state that feels like the exact opposite of coffee.

Time it right

You probably already know to limit your coffee consumption to mornings and middays. That advice is even more important with cannabis, especially if you’re drinking your coffee alongside THC products associated with alertness. Enjoying coffee and cannabis together too late in the day could interfere with your sleep.

Avoid driving

If you can’t quite get to Amherst for coffee without driving, bring a sober buddy along. There’s no such thing as “I’m not that high, I can drive” — any amount of THC in your system means you should be in the passenger seat. And if you can’t avoid driving, stick to CBD-only products when mixing with caffeine. CBD without THC is non-intoxicating, so it’s driving-friendly.
